About Anthony Beard
Anthony started in Telecoms at the age of 17, straight after leaving college. He joined the service
department of a Telecoms company, working his way up to the position of Assistant Manager within
just 12 months. He then decided that, in addition to knowing how the service department ran, he
wanted to learn what the engineers did. He approached his manager and was told that if he took
a pay cut, he could go out with the engineers! He decided that it was still something he wanted to
do and within 3 months was installing systems in large companies and county councils. He moved
into Sales later on which, he felt, completed his knowledge of the whole process.
He moved to another telecoms company where he really mastered engineering, at a time when the
company was contracting to the industry. Anthony began to receive calls directly from companies
asking for him specifically and made the decision to branch out on his own.
Company history
Having made the decision to start his own business, Anthony saved £500 to buy a van and a tool kit.
The van lasted 3 weeks before blowing up on the M3!
In the early days, the work was mainly the installation of Smartboxes and FBC’s, which allowed calls
to be re-routed away from B.T. This was possible as B.T. had just started to allow the resale of
telephone calls to other providers.
In addition to the installations, Anthony began to do sub-contracting work for other telecommunication
companies, travelling the length and breadth of the country, until such time that there was more work
coming in than he could keep up with by himself. At this point, Anthony started to need additional
engineers to meet the demand and had employed 3 of them within 12 months.
Business continued to grow until it became necessary, in 2001, to rent the first of several offices,
which also made it possible to expand into selling and the company’s first salesman was employed.
The next major move forward was the purchase of a billing platform in 2002, making it possible for us
to invoice call and line charges independently. Around 2006, the company became part of
BT Wholesale enabling us to provide cheaper line rental services.
The business has expanded further with the recruitment of additional office & technical staff and
additional engineers, followed by a move in 2008, to the current premises where we enjoy some
2200 sq ft of office space. However, Abtec remains very much a local, family business with both
of Anthony’s sisters and his wife being part of the team and the offices remaining in the family’s
home town.
All of our engineers are fully manufacturer trained and we have an ongoing commitment to ensuring
that they are fully up-to-date with the latest technologies and systems. We recently calculated that
our engineers have over 40 years of experience between them! All of our office staff are also more
than qualified to perform their roles, whether by qualification or by experience and they regularly
attend product training sessions too.
